What is Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, reduces the size of your ears or moves protruding ears back toward your head. Having overly large ears, or ears that “stick out,” can be embarrassing for both children and adults. Oklahoma ear surgery can boost self-esteem by helping people feel more comfortable with their appearance.

At Dr. Garland Porterfield’s office, patients come in from across the region — Oklahoma City, Edmond, Midwest City, Lawton and Shawnee — to ask about ear surgery. Dr. Porterfield and his compassionate staff understand that large or protruding ears can cause stress and unhappiness for both men and women. We warmly invite you to stop in for a scheduled appointment to learn about your options for ear surgery in OK.

Am I a Good Candidate for Oklahoma City Ear Surgery?

As long as you are in good health, both physically and emotionally, and have realistic expectations about the procedure, you are probably an ideal candidate for Oklahoma ear surgery. Patients who undergo Oklahoma City ear surgery typically have an ear or ears that are protruding, overly large or abnormally shaped.

However, you may not be a good candidate for ear surgery if you have certain medical conditions, such as:

high blood pressure (hypertension)
thyroid problems
diabetes

What’s the best way to determine whether Oklahoma City ear surgery is right for you? Talking with a board-certified surgeon, such as Dr. Porterfield, is a good start. During your initial consultation, he will extensively discuss your goals, evaluate your health and carefully examine you to assess your suitability for the procedure.

How are Ear Surgeries Performed?

Oklahoma City ear surgery takes at least two hours and can involve moving, reshaping, adding or removing elements of the ear’s structure. General anesthesia is normally recommended for young patients and may require an overnight hospital stay. Older children and adults, however, are typically administered local anesthesia alone, or combined with a mild sedative, and return home within hours of the procedure.

Otoplasty has two common techniques. In the first method, the Oklahoma City surgeon finds the most inconspicuous site on the back of the ear to make the incision. He then sculpts the exposed ear cartilage and re-positions it closer to the head. The surgeon may use permanent sutures to help the cartilage stay in position. If necessary, the surgeon will remove excessive cartilage to improve the final appearance of the ear.

The other technique starts with the removal of skin on the ear. A small file is passed to the front of the ear to gently score the cartilage. Then the ear cartilage is folded back. After marking the cartilage, the surgeon places stitches through the back of the ear cartilage without going all the way through the front of the ear. After a series of these permanent sutures are placed, they are tied down, folding the ear to create a normal, more aesthetically pleasing contour. There is no cartilage removed in this technique. At this point, the bowl (concha) of the ear can be tilted back if necessary, and any adjustments to the earlobe are made. The skin is then closed with an absorbable suture.

During your initial consultation with Dr. Porterfield, he can discuss the various techniques he uses for ear surgery in Oklahoma City. He works with a highly skilled surgical team and uses board-certified anesthesiologists for all of his procedures.

What is Recovery Like After Ear Surgery?

After an Oklahoma City ear surgery, your head is wrapped in a thick bandage, which helps to maintain the new position of the ears, protects them and aids the healing process. You will need to return to the otoplasty surgeon's office within the first few days to have the bandage changed for a lighter one.

After your ear surgery, you should only experience mild to moderate pain, which can be controlled with medication prescribed by your doctor. For some patients, mild swelling may persist for many weeks. Bruising typically disappears within seven to 10 days, and stitches are usually removed within a week.

Most adult patients return to normal activity within three days of Oklahoma City ear surgery. More complicated procedures may require a longer recovery time. Children can return to normal activities in seven days, but must be watched in playful activities for at least three weeks to avoid damage to the healing ears. For both adults and children, the ears should not be bent for at least a month or more.
